One of my clients recently discovered that she just did not know much about this concept about self-love. We hear the example of the airlines telling us to put our oxygen mask on first and for many folks self-care has become something that they are actively trying to be better at. The thing is that self-care and self-love are not exactly one in the same. You cannot just say book my hair appointment and now self see how loved you are. No, no, no, no. Self-love is so much more and most often we feel like kooks when we start giving ourselves self-love.
The self-love that I'm speaking of goes much deeper than a hot, bubble bath or some rich, dark chocolate. It's more about taking time to have conversations with your younger self, your subconscious, the parts that are hiding to keep you safe. Now, I'm not suggesting go around town talking aloud to yourself. I'm just saying take some time to spend with your internal dialogues. The ones that are saying you are dumb, so stupid, will never know how to manage money. The ones who are saying why can't I just get the clients coming in already. I'll never be a good boss, Mom, wife, partner. The ones that are saying you are always late, I'll always be fat, I just love food so much that there's no hope for me to lose weight so I'll just be fat and happy. These are all things that I've heard my clients and myself say. This is not what self-love is. In fact, it's quite opposite.
If we are lucky enough to have been taught to love others unconditionally then we will know that all of those words are signs of conditional love. Unconditional love of self is the ability to laugh when you make a mistake and say well let's look at all of those valuable lessons that we have learned, let's have our inner child come out to play and tell us what she needs from us, let's sit in silence and look forward to being alone because you enjoy your own company, and it is the ability to feel like you might be committed if someone sees you having these conversations with yourself, but having them anyway.
Love Yourself and the rest of the world will follow. You are not what others say about you.
